Christina Ricci has been acting for more than three decades already, but the popular ’90s child star shows no signs of slowing down with upcoming roles in the much-awaited Tim Burton Netflix show Wednesday and the second season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets.
While her role in Wednesday hasn’t been disclosed yet, Ricci’s decision to join the show has thrilled fans of The Addams Family franchise, as she portrayed the creepy yet lovable character Wednesday Addams in the live-action films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. In her illustrious career, Ricci has starred in a number of beloved and successful TV shows, some of which have gotten high scores on the review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes.
Joey (2004 – 2006): 50%
Coming off the popularity of the hit ’90s show Friends, writers and executive producers Scott Silveri and Shana Goldberg-Meehan created the spin-off Joey, which focused on the beloved Friends character Joey Tribbiani. The show follows Joey as he moves to the West Coast to fully pursue a career as an actor.
Diehard fans of Friends will know that Joey has plenty of sisters, and Ricci plays one of them. In the episode “Joey and the Fancy Sister,” Joey receives a visit from Ricci’s character, Mary Theresa. Unlike Joey’s other siblings, Mary Theresa is incredibly spoiled, which causes Joey trouble. The show aired for two seasons before abruptly getting the ax.
Ally McBeal (1997 – 2022): 61%
The legal drama TV show Ally McBeal ended more than 20 years ago, but it has cultivated a loyal following that still clamors for its revival. The show is about the titular character and her life as a lawyer working for a Boston law firm. Despite being a legal drama, the show also featured a lot of Ally’s personal life.
On the show’s fifth and final season, Ricci appeared as the cutthroat lawyer Liza Bump, who battled Ally’s law firm colleagues in court. She played the character for seven episodes of the show. Ally McBeal left a lasting impact on viewers due to its smartly-written dialogue and amazing cast.
Z: The Beginning Of Everything (2015 – 2017): 69%
The life of American socialite Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald inspired the period drama Z: The Beginning of Everything. Ricci stars as Zelda in the TV show, which focused on her life and her marriage to the beloved American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Many viewers found the show’s premise interesting, as it took a look at the Fitzgerald’s life before the author achieved fame. But despite Ricci’s convincing portrayal of a sophisticated Southern Belle, the show was criticized for its overbearing performances and sloppy writing.
Pan Am (2011 – 2012): 70%
Pan Am is a period drama focusing on the lives of the stewardesses and pilots of the namesake airline during the ’60s. Ricci was one of the leading actors in the show, playing the idealistic and headstrong stewardess, Maggie Ryan.
While the show featured feminist narratives and successfully highlighted the glitz and elegance of air travel in the ’60s, Pan Am received a lot for its cheesy dialogue and mediocre storylines. Because of that, the show was canceled by ABC after only one season.
Saving Grace (2007 – 2010): 76%
The crime drama TV show Saving Grace revolved around Grace Hanadarko, an Oklahoma City detective who is known for her rambunctious lifestyle. Holly Hunter played the lead role of Grace and was praised for her standout performance as an antiheroine.
Ricci had a three-episode arc on the show, playing the character Abby Charles, a young detective who stands in for Grace’s partner, Ham Dewey, after he takes a leave of absence. The show was praised for its stellar cast, gritty storyline, and witty script.
Grey’s Anatomy (2005 – ): 84%
Grey’s Anatomy is arguably the most popular medical drama in television history. Created by the prolific writer and TV producer Shonda Rhimes, the series has captured the hearts of viewers all over the world with its moving story arcs, memorable characters, and unique narratives.
Many great characters have come and gone from Grey’s Anatomy, but some guest roles have left a mark on the show’s fans. These include Ricci’s character, Hannah Davies, a paramedic who used her hand to stop a wound from bleeding, not knowing that she actually prevented a bomb inside the patient from exploding.
The Simpsons (1989 – ): 85%
Any television viewer who isn’t familiar with The Simpsons must simply live under a rock. The long-running animated sitcom created by Matt Groening has been on the air for more than 30 years and has aired around 700 episodes. It has also featured a number of crossover episodes with other animated shows like Futurama and American Dad!.
Ricci guest starred in the episode “Summer of 4 Ft. 2″ as Erin, a friend that Lisa gained after changing her personality and concealing her intelligence. While The Simpsons is still culturally relevant and on air to this day, some critics and diehard fans note that the quality of the show’s episodes have declined.
50 States Of Fright (2020): 85%
The now-defunct Quibi might not have been a popular streaming platform, but it produced a number of excellent TV shows. These include the horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, which was produced by acclaimed horror director, Sam Raimi.
Ricci played the role of Bitsy in “Red Rum,” which was about a group of friends who decided that it would be a good idea to visit the basement tunnels of the haunted Stanley Hotel. 50 States of Fright was well-received by horror fans for its diverse narratives, spine-tingling scenes, and bite-sized format.
The Good Wife (2009 – 2016): 93%
Julianna Margulies is most known for her leading role in the hit political drama, The Good Wife. For seven seasons, the show chronicled how Margulies’ character, Alicia Florrick, re-established her law career after her husband’s involvement in a sex and corruption scandal. The show earned a lot of fans for its insights into law, politics, and society.
Ricci only guest starred in a single episode of the Emmy-winning show. As Therese Dodd in the episode “Anatomy of a Joke,” she played a comedian who was battling a television network in court after she bared her breasts on live TV.
Yellowjackets (2021 – ): 100%
Yellowjackets is a drama show centered on a group of teenagers who experienced a horrific plane crash in the ’90s. The show goes back and forth between the past and present as a blackmailer threatens to reopen the wounds of those involved in the accident.
In the show, Ricci played Misty Quigley, the Yellowjacket’s bullied equipment manager who grew up to be a care facility nurse. For her performance as Misty, Ricci earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.
