Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is back in the headlines, not only for the Jon Snow sequel series that’s being developed at HBO but also because of his upcoming thriller, Blood for Dust. The 35-year-old actor is set to play a villain named Ricky in the film directed by Rod Blackhurst. It also stars Scoot McNairy and Josh Lucas.
With production scheduled to begin production later this month, Harington chatted with The Hollywood Reporter all about the film. And of course, it wouldn’t be an interview with Kit Harington if he wasn’t asked about the Game of Thrones universe.
Kit Harington talks playing a villain in Blood for Dust
Talking about his role as the antagonist of Blood for Dust, Harington says that he’s been trying to “take roles that I’m a bit scared about doing.”
It’s fun playing a baddie, I think. I spent a long time playing the epitome of a good, honest human, trying to do the right thing that everyone’s rooting for. And maybe this is a reaction to the length of time I was doing that.
Of course, he’s referring to playing Jon Snow, an honorable characters who always strived to do the right thing. Blood for Dust is also a different experience for Harington because it’s an indie project, something he wants to do more of.
Kit Harington thinks House of the Dragon is “great”
When asked for his thoughts on the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Harington admitted he hasn’t finished the first season yet:
You know, I’ve fallen off a bit — not because I’m not enjoying it — but just been very busy. But I’m gonna catch up. I’m sort of halfway through the season. I need to watch the second half, so I’m gonna try and avoid any kind of spoilers. I mean, it’s great. They’ve done a brilliant job with it. I’m really impressed with that show and how they’ve continued it.
And when asked about the possible Jon Snow show, Harington responded with a callback to his character, saying, “I know nothing about that. I’m sorry.” I guess that is to be expected.
What’s going on with the Jon Snow show?
At this point, while there’s a chance we’ll be getting a Game of Thrones spinoff all about Jon Snow, it hasn’t been officially announced yet. That means there’s a chance it could not happen, too. Back in June, The Hollywood Reporter said the series was in “early development,” and so far we haven’t really gotten many substantial updates past that.
George R.R. Martin has been less tight-lipped than Harington, however, and shared some details about the potential series in a blog post shortly after it was first reported. The acclaimed author said he was “involved” in the spinoff, revealing that he’s met with Harington’s team “to hammer out the show.” That said, he also noted that not every show idea actually ends up happening.
Whether or not we see Harington back on our screens as Jon Snow, there won’t be a shortage of roles for the Emmy nominee. In addition to Blood for Dust, he’s set to play Frankenstein’s monster in a Mary Shelley biopic aptly called Mary’s Monster, directed by Farren Blackburn.
Hopefully one of the next times Harington is interviewed, we’ll be getting confirmation of his Game of Thrones spinoff.
