In The Testaments, it is revealed that Aunt Lydia has been using the power Gilead has granted her in order to get blackmail on the various Commanders and Gileadean leaders. Along with further exploring her backstory, The Testaments shows Aunt Lydia’s anti-Gilead plans, with her using blackmail to take down the oppressive country from the inside. What Aunt Lydia Changing Would Mean For The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6

Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale.

Aunt Lydia’s immense power and influence over the Handmaids means that Gilead could be in for a world of hurt if she chooses to switch sides. Lydia could harness the already rebellious Handmaids for her own plans, using them to fight back against Gilead. Aunt Lydia also already has a lot of blackmail on the Commanders, with her info being key to Commander Putnam’s execution, and switching sides would only make this info deadlier.

Being one of Gilead’s most powerful authority figures, Aunt Lydia has always had an immense influence over Gilead’s politics. She has connections to several major Commanders, including those with anti-Gilead tendencies like Lawrence and Nick Blaine, so turning against Gilead could allow her to join this treasonous group. With their forces combined, the three may just have what it takes to bring Gilead down from the inside in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6.
