Aunt Lydia will be an important character in the spinoff series The Testaments, and The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 has finally set her story up.
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Hadmaid’s Tale season 5!The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 was an emotional ride for Aunt Lydia, but it has finally set up her transformation for the story of Hulu’s The Testaments spinoff. The Testaments is a 2019 sequel to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale focusing on the aftermath of several characters from the original novel. Aunt Lydia is one of these, and her portrayal in The Testaments is quite different from her portrayal in The Handmaid’s Tale — and season 5 has finally prepared Lydia for this change.
In The Testaments, it is revealed that Aunt Lydia has been using the power Gilead has granted her in order to get blackmail on the various Commanders and Gileadean leaders. Along with further exploring her backstory, The Testaments shows Aunt Lydia’s anti-Gilead plans, with her using blackmail to take down the oppressive country from the inside. Although she hasn’t always been plotting against Gilead, Aunt Lydia has started to turn, gaining sympathy for the Handmaids while realizing how corrupt the Commanders are. The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 ends with the Eyes pushing Lydia down and arresting Janine, which could finally be the breaking point that causes her to switch allegiances, setting up her Testaments future.
What Aunt Lydia Changing Would Mean For The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6
Aunt Lydia’s immense power and influence over the Handmaids means that Gilead could be in for a world of hurt if she chooses to switch sides. Lydia could harness the already rebellious Handmaids for her own plans, using them to fight back against Gilead. Aunt Lydia also already has a lot of blackmail on the Commanders, with her info being key to Commander Putnam’s execution, and switching sides would only make this info deadlier.
Being one of Gilead’s most powerful authority figures, Aunt Lydia has always had an immense influence over Gilead’s politics. She has connections to several major Commanders, including those with anti-Gilead tendencies like Lawrence and Nick Blaine, so turning against Gilead could allow her to join this treasonous group. With their forces combined, the three may just have what it takes to bring Gilead down from the inside in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6.
Aunt Lydia Has To Return For Hulu’s The Testaments Spinoff
Although it isn’t known what will happen to Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, she really needs to return for The Testaments. She is one of the novel’s most well-developed characters, with her The Testaments story shedding a whole new light on the character. Going against Gilead is the only proper conclusion for Aunt Lydia’s arc, something that could be fully explored in the spinoff. Plus, Aunt Lydia is one of the main characters in The Testaments, meaning she has to return after The Handmaid’s Tale season 6.
