George’s latest arc on Young Sheldon suggests that it is effectively skipping Sheldon’s second darkest storyline about him on The Big Bang Theory. Inspired by Sheldon’s penchant for sharing anecdotes from his childhood, CBS greenlit Young Sheldon to fully explore his time with his family in Texas before moving to Pasadena. This allows the prequel to fully show many of Sheldon’s memorable experiences, especially with regard to the rest of the Coopers, particularly his father. However, the recent turn of events on Young Sheldon season 6 hints that the network is opting to totally disregard one of his darkest anecdotes about George.
In The Big Bang Theory season 9, Sheldon talked about his dad getting fired from his cashier job after he caught him stealing and ratting him out for it. George losing his original work on the Young Sheldon season 5 finale seemed like a set-up for this, as he worked on Dale’s as a salesperson instead. Things have now changed, however, after Medford High School was forced to reinstate him as his full-time football team coach. It’s uncertain if George will continue to do part-time at Dale’s shop, but it won’t be surprising if he lets go of it soon.
Why Young Sheldon Skips George’s Stealing Plotline
For years, Young Sheldon struggled to reconcile its version of George with how Sheldon and Mary described him on The Big Bang Theory. Instead of the lazy and no-good family man, the Cooper patriarch is actually a flawed but dedicated father and husband on the prequel spin-off. Because of this, the offshoot has to be smart with which stories about him from The Big Bang Theory they want to tackle, explaining why the aforementioned one simply wasn’t included. Additionally, Young Sheldon season 6 already has a lot of plot lines simultaneously unraveling. Doing George’s stealing narrative would disrupt the show’s storytelling flow at this point.
George Still Has Dark Days Ahead On Young Sheldon
After the tumultuous end of Young Sheldon season 5, things are starting to feel normal again in the Cooper household. Both Mary and George are once again with full-time jobs; Georgie and Mandy are getting along well; the Cooper twins are doing okay, and Meemaw’s business continues to thrive. However, there are still dark days ahead for Sheldon’s family – particularly his dad. George’s affair and death are set to take place in the next year or two. Unlike his stealing storyline, George’s delayed cheating scandal is far too important in his son’s personal arc to skip. Meanwhile, George’s impending demise cannot be disregarded because of TBBT’s continuity.
Unfortunately, Young Sheldon has limited time with George. Because of this, CBS should take advantage of this peaceful period in the Cooper household and show more of his relationship with every single member of his family. Skipping his stealing arc gives the show this storytelling opportunity. After that, it will all be downhill for him as he makes the grave mistake of having an extra-marital relationship.
